On 15 August 2025, the new cohort of Master of Science in Maritime Technology and Management (MTM) students had the priviledge of attending an exclusive guest lecture by Mr. Ong Kim Pong, Group CEO of PSA International. This was followed by their first learning journey with a visit to PSA Horizons and the Innovation Centre, offering valuable insights into innovation, sustainability, and the future of port operations.
The afternoon began with an engaging lecture by Mr. Ong, who shared valuable perspectives on the evolving dynamics of global trade and highlighted Singapore’s pivotal role in driving innovation, sustainability, and resilience in the maritime sector. Drawing on his extensive leadership experience, he encouraged students to think critically about the challenges ahead and to embrace the opportunities that await the next generation of maritime professionals.
Following this, students had the opportunity to hear from Mr. Steven Lee, who spoke about PSA’s people, culture, and commitment to talent development. He highlighted the diverse career pathways available within the organisation and introduced students to the avenues through which they could explore job opportunities and internships at PSA. His sharing provided students with a valuable understanding of how they could align their academic pursuits with future career prospects in the global port and supply chain industry.
The visit continued with a guided tour of PSA Horizons and the Innovation Centre, where students witnessed first-hand the technologies shaping the future of port operations. Key highlights included the Automated Crane Operations Centre, which manages unmanned rail-mounted yard crane operations at Pasir Panjang Terminals 4–6 through intelligent planning and proprietary systems.
At Innovation Centre, the spirit of co-creation was evident, where new ideas are tested in collaboration with startups, researchers, and industry partners. These initiatives not only enhance operational resilience but also strengthen Singapore’s position as the world’s leading transshipment hub.
Sustainability featured strongly, with green innovations like electrification and renewable energy adoption paving way for a cleaner, smarter port. The visit also highlight PSA’s focus on workforce transformation, ensuring people remain at the heart of progress.
This inaugural learning journey gave students not only deeper insights into port operations, but also an inspiring glimpse of the exciting career possibilities that lie ahead in the maritime industry.
