Shanghai Maritime University (SMU) Visit to the National University of Singapore (NUS) Centre for Maritime Studies
On 14 July 2025, Centre for Maritime Studies (CMS) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) hosted a group of undergraduate students from Shanghai Maritime University (SMU) for a half-day academic visit focused on maritime innovation, simulation, and systems thinking.
The programme began with a warm welcome and an Introduction to the Maritime Technology and Management (MTM) Programme by Dr Li Haobin, Senior Lecturer and Assistant Head (Outreach and External Relations) at the Department of Industrial Systems Engineering and Management (ISEM). Dr Li shared how the MTM programme equips students with interdisciplinary knowledge that bridges maritime operations, data analytics, and strategic management—offering insights into NUS’s unique approach to preparing future-ready maritime professionals.
This was followed by an engaging workshop on FlexTerm, the port operations simulator, conducted by Ms Shao Changying, Research Associate at the Centre for Next Generation Ports (C4NGP), Department of ISEM. Students were introduced to real-time terminal simulation tools and experienced how decisions around berth planning, equipment allocation, and yard operations can impact port efficiency and performance.
The final session was an Introduction to System Dynamics Simulation, led by Ms Chen Hongdan, Teaching Assistant at the Department of ISEM. Through interactive discussions, the students explored how system dynamics can be used to model and analyse complex relationships in maritime logistics and supply chains.
The visit offered SHMU students a valuable opportunity to explore NUS’s educational and research initiatives in maritime studies, while also fostering cross-border academic exchange and mutual learning.
CMS was pleased to welcome the SHMU student group and looks forward to continuing collaboration with maritime institutions in the region and beyond.
